In the modern world, all electronics are becoming more powerful, yet more compact. We all need something small that delivers on the move, for the youth even more so. So why should amps be an exception? Ye,s there used to be a time when mini guitar amps sounded like a toy amp, but not anymore.
Yes, we mean those tiny little amps that come with guitar bundles quite often. With the quality of passive radiators getting better day by day, some of these can now fill up a room as well! No more are these a beginner guitarist choice but these can serve professional musicians very well for practice or even while travelling. Whether you are thinking of something all-encompassing with inbuilt effects or a simple amp with a good clear tone to use guitar pedals with, let’s check out what options we got here.
1. Positive Grid Spark Series: Spark Mini and Spark Go: A World of Possibilities in a Tiny Box
With balanced detail, crackling bass and enough low end, the Positive Grid Spark Mini is an ideal choice, more so, if you are okay with using the app as that opens a world of possibilities. With a solid glass fibre build quality, the amp comes with 4 inbuilt presets. But if you are open to using the phone app for more, you get full control over 43 effects and full amp catalog; as well as more than 1000 presets to chose from – well ahead from competitors!
Coming to the Spark Mini’s younger brother, the Spark Go is ideal if you want an even more compact version of the amp, quite literally to get ‘Go’-ing. As it’s older brother the Go needs an app to explore its full potential as well. You get 43 effects to choose from and plenty of amp models as well. Only thing you are missing out here may be the weaker low ends, given the single 2″ speaker size as compared to the Mini’s 2*2″. This is quite an obvious compromise which also makes it a not-so-suitable option for bassists, but if you do not play bass that often you are good to go.

2. NUX Mighty Lite BT MKII: A Budget Mini Amp with Promising Features
We have to appreciate NUX’s efforts in the mini guitar amp market just as it has started building a name in the guitar pedal segment as well. The amp is to be used alongside the very user friendly simple MightyAmp app, easy enough for even technophobes to get used to. If you do not want to use the app right away however, you can choose from a reverb or delay (one at a time) to get playing with the standard Gain, Volume and Tone control. There is also a drum machine with nine different patterns. Priced around $100 this making it a steal, the amp runs on 6 AA batteries or a USB C port.

3. Boss Katana Mini X : Boss’ Second Attempt at the Katana Mini Amp
Boss had previously launched the Boss Katana Mini. The Mini X is another attempt for Boss to be the best in the mini amp segment just like the OG Katana and we see a success here gladly unlike the predecessor. While you can use 6 rechargeable AA batteries while on the move, you can also upgrade to an USB C charged integrated rechargeable battery. While this is not an ideal option if you are low on space because of its not that mini size, the 5″ speaker has plenty of punch and enough low end. So if you are okay with the device using a little more space, which is still quite less considering the sound it delivers, at the same time delivering millions of tones without any app, go for it.

4. Orange Micro Dark
A great option for gigging musicians, this is a more simpler option with just a 3 knob setup that gives you total control over the 20W hybrid power. However if you are looking for a versatile practice amp for home, this is not the one. Another issue is since it requires a cabinet, whether the combo can be considered a ‘mini amp’ is questionable.

5. Blackstar Fly 3 Charge
For players who do not want to bother themselves with the fuss about apps and practice tools, this is a good option with lots of good tones and ease of use. However, with only a single EQ knob and two channels, there are other mini amps on this list that offer a lot more tones.

6. Laney Mini-STB-Lion 2
The second iteration of the Laney Lion Mini comes with a Bluetooth unlike the predecessor and 3″ dual speakers. An enhanced version of the Lion Mini, the standout feature here is of course the sound.

7. MARCUS MILLER CMD 101 Micro 60
For the bassists out there, here is one amp that you should definitely check out. It is just one of those pieces of gear that you can just plug and play. With everything you need from a mini amp: dedicated DI and Phones out, a 3-band EQ and enough headroom from that 60W preamp wired to a 10″ speaker cone- this product from Markbass comes with guaranteed satisfaction.
