Katy Perry made history today as she soared into space aboard Blue Origin’s latest mission, becoming part of the first all-female crew to launch in over 60 years.
The pop superstar was joined by an exceptional team: former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, journalist Lauren Sanchez, and film producer Kerianne Flynn. The milestone marks the first female-only space flight since Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963.
Prior to liftoff at 8:30am local time (2:30pm BST), the crew completed intensive last-minute astronaut training in Texas. Perry, never one to miss a moment for humor, posted photos of herself and Sanchez in custom blue jumpsuits with the caption: “I put the ‘ass’ in astronaut.”
Speaking to the Associated Press before launch, Katy Perry had described the journey as a bold step meant to inspire the next generation, especially young girls. “No limitations,” she said. “I’m excited to learn more about STEM and the engineering behind this mission.”
During training, Perry experienced what she called cosmic “confirmations.” She noticed that the capsule bore a feather design — a nickname her mother calls her — and later discovered its name was “Tortoise,” another of her mother’s pet names for her. “There are no coincidences,” she said. “Something bigger is steering the ship.”
The entire journey lasted just over 10 minutes, with approximately four minutes spent in zero gravity before the capsule gently returned to Earth. It was Blue Origin’s 11th human spaceflight, part of Jeff Bezos’ broader vision to make space more accessible.
Sanchez praised the mission as a symbol of dreaming big, calling the crew “incredible storytellers.”
Katy Perry, meanwhile, truly lived up to her words — boldly going to space with wit, heart, and undeniable flair.
