TatsaT garner a Carnatic metal fusion outfit for the ages with “Adiyogi” ft. Gino Banks

TatsaT represent the fusion metal that India resounds with. A Carnatic flow takes over this incredible style, making for music that is spiritual, yet definitively true to the genre. You might ask yourself, what is the nature of metal? Seeing passion through your eyes-speaking through melodies. This is their debut single, Adiyogi. We also got the chance to speak to the band, and tell us about this endeavour.

1) How did you chance upon this fusion style? How did the music of TatsaT come about?
This fusion style emerged from curiosity and a passion for the heaviness and cinematic nature of progressive metal and the depth & emotions of Carnatic music. A few bands are already exploring similar fusion structures, but there remains ample opportunity for new sounds and experimentation within such songwriting.

It is a challenging exercise for us as a band to embrace innovative approaches; at times, we even take a step back and analyse the song to ensure it creates a cohesive experience. Once it achieves this, the song becomes deeply ingrained in one’s mind.

Even in terms of production, we face significant challenges, as we do not aim for the generic sound and heaviness typically associated with metal music. Our goal is to reach a wider audience; we desire our songs to be enjoyed by non-metal listeners as well, without losing the heaviness and cinematic experience.

A fusion of culture and art

The track opens with the traditional mantra, and the band delivers on the odd timed explorations with power. The verse is a softer dissonance, spreading the cone wide with a soothing essence. You can still hear the metal chug syncing with the drums, creating the rhythm section that you will come to adore. Vocals are essential and bring all the narrative swing the song by TatsaT needs.

2) Your music combines mythological elements. Is it a narrative style you’re going for?

TatsaT, as a project, has a lore that we will unveil alongside the songs. From a fictional perspective, TatsaT embarks on a journey of self-discovery and freedom. Each member has their elements and characteristics associated with them. The songs will tell a narrative story that mirrors the relatable mythological perspective, reflecting the emotions and circumstances of modern humans.

This is the kind of music that Indian metal represents from a roots perspective. To know your culture and learn more through such visual and dramatic pieces-only a fusion with metal truly brings this nature out. Gino Banks reflects the theme of the song very well, understanding where he must disappear and listen to the majesty of Adiyogi. The mix is done extremely well, being able to reflect the theme of the song and devotion with precision.

The band’s vision

3) Tell us about the band- its inception and the kind of vision you have.

Darcligt, Andy’s solo project, went through a period of introspective artistic and musical development in 2022, following its final iteration. Andy founded TatsaT as a continuation of that journey in early 2024. Andy met Kunal Dalvi (lyricist) at Independence Rock in 2023, where they simply discussed their respective music projects. Something sparked that day, and after a few meetings and conversations, TatsaT began to take shape.

Later, Naval (vocalist), who had been wanting to write and experiment with original music, joined the mix in March 2024. Later in the year, joined Jatin (bassist) and Meher (keyboardist). Chaitanya Nirantar (Mix/Master Engineer) has played an important role in shaping the sound of TatsaT with Andy. After much back and forth and more risk-taking, the sound of TatsaT is still being discovered.

4) How was it collaborating with Gino Banks? How do you look at collaborations with other artists?

It was an absolute pleasure for TatsaT to have Gino Banks in ‘Adiyogi’, but that’s not all; Gino sir is collaborating with TatsaT on a few more releases this year. He is a drum maestro, a consummate professional, and his songwriting and performance are unparalleled. Andy was very particular about having natural live drums because they sounded more organic and the music required it. Collaborating is a very enjoyable activity, and the collaborators’ influences and ideas definitely improve the song.

TatsaT and their future plans

5) What else is in the pipeline for TatsaT?

TatsaT plans to release a series of singles this year, culminating in a full-length album called “FYRST”, which will most likely be released by the end of the year. We’ve already written 3-4 songs; all we need to do now is finalise the parts and print them on the recording software. So far, the writing process has been difficult, and we plan to release singles one at a time. There are many more ideas floating around in the project, and since we are just getting started, we don’t want to overwhelm ourselves and instead take things one step at a time.

6) Tell us the tale of Adiyogi. Why did you choose the image of Shiva as your first release?

The first stage of our journey is Adiyogi, we could not have ignored the song’s insistence on Shiva’s presence while it was being written. Although we had another song in the works prior to Adiyogi’s lyrical structure, this song consumed us, and the experience of each member trying to know the unknown was beautiful.”

TatsaT is able to represent the character of the Lord with their own individual style, making the composition something that will have you almost emotional and overwhelmed by the end. Released exactly on Shivaratri, this is the resounding spirit of the soul-bringing what they have to offer with a spectacular debut. You can listen to the song below and be prepared for more music to come this year:

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
