‘Infinite They Went’ by Marla Mase is an Alternative Rock Album that is Introspective and Thought-Provoking

Infinite They Went’ by Marla Mase is an 11-track alternative rock album that takes on elements of 70’s disco pop, funk, and synth-pop to take her listeners on a journey. The lyrics on the album feel as witty as they are thought-provoking, simple and repetitive at times to help build this calm intensity through emotion.

Each track makes observations, whether quick-paced or slow, while the instrumentation adds a layer of emotion to these observations that helps them hit.

‘Infinite They Went’: Track-by-Track

‘Infinite They Went’: ‘Things That Scare Me’- ‘A Gun’

‘Things That Scare Me- Remastered 2025’ uses its groovy synths and rhythms to seemingly run in place. The lyrics spiral as our narrator describes every fear they’ve ever had, while the core emotion of the track moves in the opposite direction. While these fears are listed, we get proof that our narrator is human, with all their contradictions and faults. This song is proof that they exist.

“…I ain’t what I seem…’

The track also seems to foreshadow the themes we follow through the rest of the album, with immediate callbacks in subsequent tracks.

‘Falling Sideways- Remastered 2024’ offers off-kelter, lopsided perspectives of seemingly mundane moments. The narrator’s observations on the track are a bit sideways on the track, while they ask, “…how did I get here?…’. And later, “…how did we get here?…”. The track is as introspective as it is witty.

‘ALL FALL SHORT’ is another quick-paced track that begins monosyllabically before cascading into phrases then sentences. There’s an evident sense of physicality on the track, that is further layered on by this deep, almost dark instrumentation. Our narrator is disillusioned here, trying to make sense of constructs that feel inescapable.

“…We all fall short.

It’s not acceptable…not metaphorical.

Who’s held accountable?…”

The instrumentation even tries to layer on some bright melodies that seem lost in a spiral.

‘A Gun- Remastered 2025’ takes on from the mood of ‘ALL FALL SHORT’ to bring in a scathing commentary on gun violence. It does this by placing guns in the hands of innocents, highlighting the very real and very scary reality that shouldn’t be so. It tries to make sense of this reality by attempting to give senselessness some reason.

“…He wants to be someone…

…One down, two down, three down, Four, invisible no more…”.

‘Infinite They Went’: ‘Dance The Tango’- ‘Truth Comes Down’

‘Dance The Tango- Remastered 2025’ uses this quick, swing-like rhythm and melody to juxtapose the clear-eyed observations made while reading obituaries in a local newspaper. We see words that attempt to simplify a well-lived life, attempting to boil someone who maybe loved to dance when they lived, down to the reason they died.

“…I read about your death in the newspaper,…

…But they forgot to mention how you like to laugh and how you like to dance the tango…’

The strings that play at the end cut through all this built-up emotion to create this distorted, lonely melody that feels sad.

‘Satellite of Love- Remastered 2025’ is a slow beat that moves further and further away. The instrumentation feels incredibly spaced out while the song’s simple lyrics seem to serve as a simple metaphor for a lover who seems detached and almost unavailable. Someone who jumps from partner to partner boldly.

‘Half-life- Remastered 2025’ is a groovy track in the perspective of somebody who chooses to be in liaisons with people who seem unavailable. The narrator here attempts to justify this choice, declaring that “…no nothing lasts forever, no never…”.

“…Tonight I just need your loving…’

The narrator’s spoken word towards to end of the song also highlights this. “….Perhaps I’m the one who’s not available or perhaps I’m as available as I’ll ever be…”

‘Truth Comes Down- Remastered 2025’ with 1/2pint and Touchy Feely is a bright punk-rock track that seems to urge the lister/narrator to face their truth. Bright and loud but juxtaposed by introspective and sometimes distorted rhythms, the narrator seems adamant. “…When the truth comes down, it’s a miracle lost & found…”

The rap on the track highlights its messaging, while the rhythms around it distort around it. “…You can’t hide from yourself…”

‘Infinite They Went’: ‘8:30’- ‘Always’ & Conclusion

‘8:30- Remastered 2025’ feels like a love song from the 90’s with its subdued, almost sensual groove. Its lyrics take us through this stream of consciousness that starts before the pandemic lockdowns & ends during them. It shows us how routines change when the masks come on, and how distance affects perception.

“…We’re more real than we’ve been in a long…time…”.

‘Piece of Piece- Remastered 2025’ brings in dark rhythms and deep percussion that layers in thinly masked frustration. It’s as urging as it is urgent, giving the listener something to think about as it goes on. “…We say we all need the same things,…so what’s stopping us?…”.

The final song on the album, ‘Always- Remastered 2025’ fittingly bids us adieu. The synths on the track feel expansive, with repetitive pulses looking for some connection while our narrator attempts to reassure.

“…Now’s the time we must say goodbye.

I’ve got to fly…

…Please don’t cry…

…Love Always…”

The narrator seems to leave us with parting words of wisdom as they almost fade off in the distance. This while leaving behind solitary pulses in search of connection

Conclusion

‘Infinite They Went’ by Marla Mase is an introspective, thought-provoking album that moves through thought and emotion with observation. You’re left thinking about the constructs that surround you while the lyrics seem to stay with you long after you’ve finished listening to the tracklist.
