Michael Vettraino’s “A Lie Not Alive”, a Synth Reflection of a World in Decay

Some songs grab your attention with a catchy hook. Others take their time, quietly settling into your mind long after they’ve ended. A Lie Not Alive, the latest single from Louisville-based artist Michael Vettraino, falls firmly into the latter category.

Vettraino, who describes himself as a “rhythm sectionalist,” doesn’t quite fit the mold of a typical synth-pop musician. His sound is carefully constructed, layered, a bit mysterious, and emotionally rich. This new release follows Chasing the Sub Lime and From Down Here, and may be his most evocative track yet.

The song is built on fuzzy synths, ghostly, choral-style vocals, and Vettraino’s deep, expressive baritone. Listening to it feels like stumbling upon an old arcade, abandoned, humming with static, and filled with echoes of the past. Compared to Michael Vettraino’s earlier songs, A Lie Not Alive is musically more minimal, drawing comparisons to the atmospheric feel of Pink Floyd’s Us and Them.

While the mood is quite soundscape, the lyrics dig into themes of lost history, environmental collapse, and irreversible choices. Vettraino paints stark images: buried cities, fading faces, and memories tangled in soil. It’s poetic but also deeply unsettling. The song captures a sense of modern unease, of always moving forward yet never truly arriving.

Vettraino doesn’t offer simple answers or solutions. What he does offer is a mirror, one that reflects a world that’s both beautiful and broken. A Lie Not Alive by Michael Vettraino, is worth a listen. Or three.
