Periscopi Invertit is the jazz funk fusion project of Mireia Carbonell, a composer, bassist, and backline technician currently based in the UK. After graduating from Barcelona’s Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Mireia spent years touring the UK festival circuit. Inspired by her love for Catalan folk and Mediterranean grooves, she decided to dive into her own musical project. Periscopi Invertit blends Catalan melodies with North African rhythms and jazzy, funky vibes, drawing influence from Barcelona’s experimental 70s music scene, Ona Laietana.

Their latest release, Stella Splendens, takes a medieval hymn from the 14th-century Llibre Vermell de Montserrat and reimagines it in a jazz fusion style. The track feels alive with energy, led by a flute that carries a bright, joyous melody. It’s a fascinating blend of old and new, connecting ancient music with funky modern rhythms. Mireia’s arrangement is a great example of her knack for weaving tradition and innovation together.
The flute is the primary lead here, introducing the main melody, which is supported by jazzy keys and cool chord progressions. Then, Mireia’s slap bass grooves come in, giving the track a cool, funky edge. As with any good jazz fusion piece, there’s room for each instrumentalist to step into the spotlight. The solos from the bass, keys, and flute are all standout moments. Karim Dellali’s darbuka rhythms add an extra layer of texture, alongside drums by Xarli Oliver and keys/piano by Zac Gvi.
This song feels like a celebration of how music can bridge time and cultures. Jazz fusion fans or anyone who enjoys hearing brilliant technical music brimming with musicality will enjoy this. If you’re looking for something something fresh and (literally) timeless, give Stella Splendens by Periscopi Invertit listen.
