‘Existential Defeat’ captures a mood, using most of its run-time to remain stuck in that heavy, constant spiral. The distorted horns that try to break through feel almost lyrical, while the tremulous string drag us down slowly. A full spiral that feels as though it fills our lungs with liquid.
There’s this sense of uneasy hesitance that keeps us stagnant. The strings hold their notes, allowing nothing but that repetitive depth to flow through, slow yet creeping. By the song’s mid-point, our muffled, distorted horns are accompanied with distorted pianos.
These pianos sound like a death knell of sorts, before the soundscape expands into something more triumphant. ‘Existential Defeat’ takes on a new dynamic, with synths and percussion leading the charge, picking up the pace. The distorted horns are no longer so, their muffles replaced with louder, clearer sound.
The synths whorl past as the horns take center stage, turning defeat into triumph but retaining this sense of depth. There’s a balance between light and dark, depth and levity.
‘Existential Defeat’ by Fugu Quintet offers up an experience that pulls its listener in, keeping us in that immersive spiral and never really letting it up. Even those last notes of triumph hold something uneasy in them.
