‘Buh-Bye’ by Zach Savage is a 10-track alternative/indie album that uses its mellow, early-Coldplay-esque sound to pose familiar, almost existential question. The album’s narrator seems to do this in the wake of a realisation, seemingly penning through those thoughts and hence driving the album’s mood and narrative.

‘Buh-Bye’: Track-by-Track
‘Buh-Bye’: ‘Lazy Sunday’- ‘Know By Heart’
‘Lazy Sunday’ sets the tone, with its acoustic guitar and breezy mood. Questions and observations float through the soundscape, which evokes imagery of someone dead-eyed and aimless. There’s this sense of loss that feels numbing in an immediate aftermath
‘Don’t Like To Battle’ continues this close to existential rant, with our narrator seemingly resisting the soundscape’s plucky call-to-action with this sense of inertia. The mood is mild but quick-paced, prodding at our narrator while they beg for these forces to just “…leave me alone, ‘cause I don’t like to battle…”.
‘Stay Busy’ seems to flow with mildly cascading, but slightly subdued rhythms. The melodies and lyrics serve to remind the narrator to focus, “…stay busy, let it go…’ in the face of all these constant reminders.
“…it’s a heavy reminder that it’s over, it’s done…”.
‘Not Going Nowhere’ feels like a response to the last track. It doubles down on this sense of loss, with its guitars and pianos. It’s lyrics insist that there’s a direction to this inertia, with our narrator seemingly defensive yet hopeful. “…I’m not going nowhere…”.
‘Know By Heart’ introduces this darker, funky groove. It’s lyrics seem to make preemptive strikes, expressing the thought that things do change. Relationships and liaisons always run that risk, “…we will grow apart…’.

‘Buh-Bye’: ‘Heartstopper’- ‘No Way Home’
‘Heartstopper’ feels deeper with its percussion-led rhythms and subdued, dynamic narrative. The track captures our narrator in a thought-spiral, processing an interaction as it seemingly happens.
“…Repeat what you said, because I don’t really follow…
…If I ruined your night, please forget this tomorrow…’.
‘Everything I Do Is Not My Own’ is a reflective confession and an object observation wrapped in one. Its this realisation of this toxic cycle that our narrator is caught up in, it attempts use its self-aware acknowledgement in an attempt to break it.
“…We should leave eachother alone…
…Everything I do is not my own…”.
‘I Dunno’ holds in its low piano melodies an acknowledgement of neglect. It describes two different people, bringing in vastly different expectations and seemingly misunderstanding eachother in the process.
“….I was there (for) your lowest moments and (now) you won’t take my calls…”.
The track feels tinged with pain.
‘Very Little Stars’ feels like a turning point on the album, with its full-sounding acoustic guitars and this sense that the narrator has let go of the pain from the last track. In between those observations is an admission, an affirmation of sorts.
“…You are not my life…”.
Powerful and what seems like a huge turning point in the narrative being presented.
‘No Way Home’ is charged with this sense of change. Our narrator finds themselves at the beginning of their journey, a new person. Someone isolated in a desolate soundscape, only armed with what feels like intuitive realisations.
The track feels like it sees itself and the collection of tracks before it from a different, emotionally charged perspective. It’s also the mark of a new beginning.
Conclusion
‘Buh-Bye’ by Zach Savage is a collection of songs that process an immense life-changing event. It holds in its moments a message of resilience, even in the face of pain, betrayal, stress and inertia.
Familiar, Bright and Reflective.
