While one thinks of Florence, and Italy, the convention has been to not think of punk rock and fast-paced, high-energy tracks; however, Spleen, the band, are out to change that paradigm. Based out of the birthplace of the Renaissance, they explore high-energy sounds and textures on their debut single, “Dystopic School” — keep reading for my thoughts!
Spleen are making a name for themselves with their electric rhythms, their infectious energy live, and their detailed, nuanced production — and “Dystopic School” is no different a track in that respect; forming the title track of their debut EP of the same name, “Dystopic School” doesn’t take long to embed itself in your head; and when the guitars do kick in bright and early in the song, their chugging nature sets the tempo and the rhythm for the song quite nicely from right the very beginning. Couple that with their great melodic writing, and tom-heavy humming style, and the weight and punch are very much there.

This energy only evolves to be higher and better throughout the song, with the vocals playing excellent support throughout. The dual-tracked vocals with their tight, gently paced delivery explore musical textures with aplomb, and Samuele with the guitar and the main vocals is the star of the show on “Dystopic School”. Supported really well by Matteo on the backing vocals and drums, and Olmo on the rhythm guitars, Spleen make for a winner of a show on this track.
The production on “Dystopic School” is a mix of punk rock, hard rock and harder-edged post rock elements, retaining an energetic, aggressive sound overall. There’s delightful crunch in the guitars, the drumming is clockwork precise, and the mixing and mastering is tight in energy, and wide in stance — exactly the kind of signature you would so seek from a punk rock track with this much energy.
All in all, “Dystopic School” by Spleen — the kind of track that will have your head bobbing to the rhythms in no time— and keeps you pumped with the energy to match. All in all, a winner of a release! Take a listen to the track here:
