Devon Nickoles, a Maryland native, embarked on her country pop journey at 11, recording her first 10-song CD in LA’s historic Beach Boys studio at 13. By 15, she debuted her music video directed by Roman White, and at 16, she graduated high school early to dive deeper into her music career. Now at 20, having shared stages with country legends and rising stars alike, including Martina McBride and Dylan Scott, Devon is poised for new releases, ready to captivate audiences once more– and her latest single, “Gold Star”, is one to look forward to– keep reading for my thoughts!
Right from the start of the song, it’s plain as day that Devon possesses immense skill when it comes to conveying emotion through her music. From the moment one hits play, the wafty, distant pads set the atmosphere perfectly, and when Devon’s vocals kick in, we’re treated to a gentle delivery, her notes tiptoeing from one to the next; with a certain intimacy, a certain depth that leaves the listener enthralled. The drums start out slow and steady, too, punctuating the rhythm quite effectively.

As we step into the pre-chorus, all instruments save for the pianos give way for Devon’s voice to shine through; and come the chorus, the ensemble led by the clean electric guitar announces its presence, lending a good boost of energy to the song. The verses remain similarly gentle, downtempo, yet high-spirited while Devon delivers powerful messages in her lyrics — ones of introspection and rediscovery of self.

The production also brings much to appreciate in its simplistic approach, placing the lyrical melodies front and centre, and playing excellent support throughout the song. The mix is tight and warm, with just enough balance in the low-end to lend the warm and the fuzzies to this track. All in all, excellently done!
In closing, “Gold Star”, by Devon Nickoles: A listen that will hit you right in the feels, and do so with polish. Take a listen to the track here!
