Nigeria-born British hip-hop rapper and lyricist A.D tears through the developing dust on his discography with the release of his latest track CocoNutz. A.D returns from earlier in the year from his single Popcorn and Winning from 2020, with an infectious two-minute hip-hop groove representing all the necessary gusto, passion and revelry.
A.D does well in differentiating his sound apart from his compatriot grime scene artists in the United Kingdom, developing more stylistic affinity with the United States and Canada hip-hop culture not just with his lyrics, but with the style of verse, instrumentation and soundscape. Customary to his vibe, A.D appears self-assured and composed with a motivation to stick it to one’s face, but with a sense of humour and attractive arrogance in the lyricism.
Characteristically, the track sports a ridiculously delicious bassline that serves the backbone for the 808s-type beat and staccato bass drums. CocoNutz is the best testimony that complexity does not make a track contagious as does the mood and groove it emanates, and the point is driven home with the track’s simple yet brilliantly effective formulas. Five singles and an album now under his belt, the discography of the British artist tells us that he is only getting started.
