‘Down to the Filter’ by Forgottensong is an evocative and haunting folk-rock track

Forgottensong is the artistic collaboration of singer-songwriter Scott Allyn and musician and producer Mark Doyle. ‘Down to the Filter’ is their new single and the title track from their latest album. The folk-rock song consists of evocative and introspective lyrics and deep vocals, paired with a classic sound. Having released a handful of singles and two albums, ‘Down to the Filter’ is Forgottensong’s third album. From this track, as well as their track record, it is clear that the music they make comes above anything else – art is being made for art’s sake. The song is deliberate, with its vulnerable lyrics, classic sound, and haunting arrangements.

Song Lyrics

The song opens with bright but grounded drumming. The lyrics, which start immediately, are vulnerable and desperate.

Did I detect the smell of smoke

On the day that you rebuilt me?

The verse sets the scene for us – the song is exploring the narrator’s relationship with, as well as the influence of, someone, or something, on his life. “On the day that you rebuilt me” suggests repair, help, refurbishing. But it sits in high contrast with the line that comes before it (Did i detect the smell of smoke) as well as the lines that come after – “The lovely words with which you spoke… They took me down down down.”

Central Imagery

Backed by a steady and vibrant beat, the song fearlessly explores a struggle with substances and self destruction. The central image of being burnt “down to the filter” is powerful and brutal. It holds, in the song’s deep raspy singing, the pain of being spent, burnt out, hitting rock bottom. The song is not afraid to explore darker themes, true to the genre of the music. It is almost unravelling a near-death experience – “Three stabs in the dark, next time you won’t miss cause – I’m an easy mark.” The narrator is self aware, but painfully so. They see the destruction – but cannot do anything with this self awareness but grapple. The vulnerability is translated beautifully.

The background vocals, the guitar, the steady but variated drums are all arranged meticulously and purposefully. The song is truly harmonious – nothing is fighting for dominance, and there is no reason not to come back to this song for multiple listens.
