Playlist : 20 Modern Rock Songs to Flip your Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has its own place in hell as a marketing event. Now let’s get into what it means for music. It can be very cathartic, and you can take any tone, especially with rock. Now, personally, I don’t like to go with the upsetting breeze emo rock has. Here is a good mix of rock post the 2000s, the good, and ugly. To your heart shaped box.

Nickelback-How You Remind Me

I don’t accept the Nickelback hate stemming from the standup joke, so here is a great track by the rock band. Yes, it’s rock, and the song is rocking without being excessively sappy.

The Killers-Mr. Brightside

Granted this is not love for love’s sake, but more of a creep. As long as you’re not one, this is for that virtual projection of you that needs to remain in this over karaoke-d Killers song that continues to hold its guns.

Jet-Are You Gonna Be My Girl

Upbeat, fast, catchy and a good question to pop across. If she’s a rock fan, she’ll say yes. Practice those yells just in case it goes off the rails. Great song and theme, minus the sob.

Hoobastank-The Reason

Worth the sob. From the video being a great feat when we watched it as kids to the opening piano riff, I think this song gives a nostalgia kick the moment you listen to your denim shorts and borrowed t-shirt.

3 Doors Down-Here Without You

Popularised by the movie Goal, this became a staple in many CDs, and I dare you to find one from the time without it. Great vocal performance, and effortless melody. A 100 days have made me older.

Snow Patrol-Chasing Cars

The song is soft, kind and every kind of mellow you want when your date has said yes. Emotional lyrics and simple execution if you want to sing it for them. Try it out.

Creed-One Last Breath

That guitar opening with “please don’t go…” should be enough to put your fight on pause. If you haven’t fought, congratulations, a wonderful number by a band lost in love.

An exciting number with the emo punk tint of MTV. This is the kind of song you scream and sing while jumping on the bed and having a blast. Date night fuel:

Incubus-Wish You Were Here

The second best song of the same name. Incubus have some amazing riffs and lyric writing, and this memorable number shows its worth quite well. Hope you have her by your side.

QOTSA-Make It Wit Chu

A sweet song by a band that usually likes to wreck chaos in their shows. From stoner rock, a moment of vulnerability from Homme to make a great number:

Keane-Somewhere Only We Know

Look, it’s piano rock and what is it doing here? Bringing people together with melody and verses. That’s what sets this song apart, poetry in motion. Have a listen if you haven’t.

Papa Roach-Leave a Light On

Another deep number just like Scars, but more of a longing tone. In the end, you get a song that makes sure the person you love knows it.

Avenged Sevenfold-Dear God

From the white album, this song has the character you need to tell the woman from afar that you love her. Works great in long distance, and the instrumental work is amazing.

Evanescence-My Immortal

Amy Lee singing this with the piano work is picture-perfect. It is the kind of music that transcends genres to have a lasting emotional impact.

Biffy Clyro-Space

A song by the well known Scottish band that brings a whole new touch to their angles of looking at love and togetherness.

Three Days Grace-Lifetime

If you found that perfect partner, this is for them. This is a great number with great melodies and flow. Check the rock monster up here:

Creed-With Arms Wide Open

Look, I’m sorry too. There had to be more than one Creed song here, and I weeded it out to the best. So here is their other song that makes tears fall:

Muse-Starlight

An uplifting song that you can sing with your partner and show them how you really feel when you’re with them. The rock band taking the charge:

Iris-Goo-Goo Dolls

I tried not to put it, but was forced by nature. This song has become popular due to its approach and amazing “singability”. Don’t believe me? Try, try:

Deat Cab For Cutie – I’ll Follow You Into The Dark

Although not traditional rock, “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” from Death Cab for Cutie’s 2005 album Plans, is an acoustic ballad written by Ben Gibbard. Inspired by reflections on mortality, love, and spirituality, Gibbard described it as both a celebration and a reconciliation of life’s fears and joys.

Remarkably written in 15 minutes, Gibbard felt the song was “channeled” rather than composed. Producer Chris Walla recorded it impromptu with just one microphone. Though it initially charted modestly, the 2006 single became the band’s best-selling track, gaining enduring popularity and appearing in various films and TV shows over the years.

Speaking about the song in 2005, Gibbard stated,

“It’s just this idea, that what if somebody dies and we’re just floating, just stumbling around in the infinite darkness, and I’m just trying to find some kind of spiritual kind of peace with myself, and the world.
[It’s] about the joy and trepidation of entering a phase of one’s life with another person. It’s about trying to reconcile all the crazy things in your own head, all the things that have been problems for you in the past. It’s about trying to reconcile all the similar experiences in the past that have gone horribly wrong and to realize that this is exciting, as well as terrifying. Which is how that celebratory thing kind of filters through.”
