‘Only You’ by Dhruvi Singh & Johaan Thekkan is an energetic indie pop track that is bursting with emotion. Its lyrics speak of a love that’s being tested by almost overwhelming vulnerability. This while its soundscape draws listener in vibrant, energetic rhythms.
The song’s explosive expansion feels a bit subdued to bring in this sense of vulnerability laced with passion. Its lines serve as a warning as much as they stand as a testament of a trust that isn’t fragile.
“…You got me falling hard,
So, please don’t break my heart…”.
Our narrator is drawn in, feel love and trust and ecstasy. But is also afraid of being let down. They allow the song to express this vulnerability, with this weight that feels significant and almost visceral. The soundscapes almost heady mood helps this sense of sensuality and vulnerability mingle.
This melding draws the listener into familiar emotions that feel almost intense in their intimacy. “…Feeling high, so, don’t let me down…”.

On ‘Only You’
‘Only You’
1. Congratulations on the release of ‘Only You’! How does it feel now that the song is out?
Johaan: It feels amazing—almost like delivering a baby after months of hard work! We’ve nurtured this song from just a tiny seed of an idea to a full-blown track, and now that it’s out in the world, it’s both exciting and surreal. As artists, seeing that transformation is one of the most rewarding parts of the process.
Dhruvi: We’re also really excited to take our listeners deeper into our creative vision. With ‘Only You,’ we’re not just putting out a song—we’re shaping the kind of music we want to make, bridging cultures, and representing India on a more global scale. It’s the start of something bigger for us, and we can’t wait to see how people connect with it.
Process & Inspiration
2. Could you walk us through the process of making this song? How did inspiration strike and how did its pieces come together?
Dhruvi: This song was a bit of a rollercoaster, honestly. It started out in a completely different space—originally, it was more of a funk-rock track. But as we kept working on it, we realized we wanted it to feel like its own kind of laid-back party. The funk-rock version was cool, but it didn’t fully capture the vibe we were going for.
Johaan: So we stripped it down and reworked it. We knew we wanted to keep the funk, but we pulled back on the heavier rock elements and infused it with more pop and electro-pop influences. Even the lyrics went through a huge transformation—Dhruvi wrote multiple drafts before we landed on the final version.
Dhruvi: Five drafts, to be precise! And each one had a completely different title, chorus identity, and melody. But that’s what made the process so exciting. For us, it’s not just about finishing a song—it’s about exploring all the different ways an idea can take shape. Every version teaches us something new about our sound, what we want our listeners to experience, and the kind of energy we want to leave them with. So while it took time, it was absolutely worth it.
“Trust & Connection”
3. ‘Only You’ seems to meld expansive melodies with lyrics bolstered by deep trust. Are there moments on the track that resonate with you?
Dhruvi: Absolutely, ‘Only You’ is stemming from a personal space and is capturing the essence of trust & connection, its meant to make the listener feel both intimate but yet expansive. Like for example, let’s take the example of this verse from the lyrics:
“What if there’s no tomorrow?
And all we got is today,
Would you beg, steal or borrow?
Cause my love is not for sale”
Even though it’s so simply put, there is a major sense of urgency, mirrored with the idea that some things can’t be bought or negotiated. It feels like a wake up call to be present in love without hesitation or holding back, about grounding yourself with value and recognising that real love is not transactional. And that balance between vulnerability & strength is the part that always hits home the hardest for me.
‘Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’
4. How would you compare the process of making this song to working on your first single, ‘Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’?
Johaan: The process was completely different—and for so many reasons. ‘Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ came with a lot of emotions: insecurity, self-doubt, an almost overwhelming passion, and the anxieties that come from being vulnerable. Even before releasing it, we felt judged and unsure, because it didn’t sound like anything that already existed. That uncertainty held us back for a long time. But once we finally put it out, we realized so much of that struggle was just self-sabotage.
Dhruvi: With ‘Only You,’ it was a completely different experience. The process felt positive, fun, and creatively exciting, and everything came together much faster. ‘Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ took us seven years to complete, while ‘Only You’ took just seven months. At this rate, who knows—maybe in another interview down the line, we’ll be saying we finished a song in seven minutes!

About Dhruvi Singh & Johaan Thekkan: Musical Journeys & Influences
Musical Journey(s)
5. Could you tell us a bit about how the two of you got your start as artists? How did your individual journeys lead you both to this point?
“I knew- whatever I did in life, it had to be around music”
Johaan: We both have pretty interesting journeys, and looking back, it feels like everything was leading up to the moment we met. We both moved around a lot growing up. I was in Dubai when I first discovered music— I was five years old, sitting in a new church on a Sunday, when I heard a massive church organ for the first time. I remember that moment so vividly because I just knew my life had changed. Soon after, I was playing keys at church— I was just a baby, but everyone encouraged me, and I loved the energy of performing.
Over the years, I moved around, eventually landing in Mumbai, where I started exploring more mainstream music. That’s when I discovered rock— and not just any rock, but Metallica. It was another life-changing moment. My brain just exploded with the realization that there was so much more music out there. From that point on, I knew— whatever I did in life, it had to be around music. I graduated at the top of my class with a degree in Sound Engineering and Visual Communication, determined to learn everything I could about the industry. I started training under leading music directors, working at studios, handling live sound for top artists, and honing my own craft as an artist. I taught myself multiple instruments— keyboard, drums, guitar, bass— and I’m currently learning the violin and saxophone! That journey led me to collaborate with other artists, and eventually…
“I loved everything about the stage- the rehearsals, the chaos, the excitement”
Dhruvi: I also grew up in Dubai, but I was there for most of my formative years. And honestly, I think I’ve been a performer since birth! I would put on little shows for anyone who would watch— my parents, teachers, friends, neighbors. And I wasn’t just performing; I was reading my audience. Even as a kid, I would change my act based on what I thought they would enjoy. Singing, acting, dancing—I did it all. In my head, I wasn’t just a cute little kid—I was a star! I even remember organizing a full three-hour event for my entire building when I was eight. I handled everything— the production, food, lights, sound, performances, seating.
Looking back, I have no idea who gave eight-year-old Dhruvi that to-do list, but apparently, I was born for it! I carried that energy into school— I acted in plays, sang in performances, and even did production work behind the scenes. I loved everything about the stage— the rehearsals, the chaos, the excitement. I knew I had to be in this world, but I wasn’t sure exactly how or in what role.
Inseparable and Unstoppable
Dhruvi: Then, years later, I moved to Mumbai. I was just figuring out the city, studying, meeting new people, when one day, a friend came running up to me, excited to show me a cover song she had recorded and fully produced. Mind you, back in 2014, this was still pretty new—studios weren’t as accessible as they are now. I was shocked. I kept asking her, ‘When did you get this talented? How did you do this? Where can I get one of those?!’ And that’s when she told me about Johaan—how he was a producer and was collaborating with new artists. I begged her to introduce me to him.
Johaan: She reached out to me in August 2014, we met in September 2014—and from that day on, we’ve been inseparable and unstoppable!
Influences
6. Which artists have influenced your musical style and sound?
Dhruvi: Neither of us have ever been confined to just one genre, sound, or artist. There’s so much to take away from every musician, and we’ve always been open to absorbing different influences.
Johaan: Absolutely. Over the years, we’ve taken bits of inspiration from every artist we’ve come across—whether in person or through their music. So, rather than crediting a single artist or sound for shaping our style as a whole, we find it more accurate to talk about specific influences behind each song.
Dhruvi: For example, ‘Only You’ is heavily inspired by the sonic worlds of Bruno Mars, Silk Sonic, Charlie Puth, The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, and other global icons. Our goal with this song was to bring that polished, infectious energy to a global stage—while representing India in the process.
Message for Listeners & Aspiring Artists
7. Do you have a message for your listeners?
Dhruvi: Our dream is to represent India on a global stage—to create music that feels real, that makes all of us feel something, and that makes our listeners proud to be Indian. But we can’t do it without you. Your support is what will take this vision to the world. So take that extra second to truly embrace what we’re trying to make you feel—because once you do, there’s no going back!
8. Lastly, do you have a message for any aspiring artists who are on a similar journey as you?
Johaan: Simply believe.
Dhruvi: He’s right, there’s no perfect formula, no shortcut, and no single path to success—but if you truly believe in yourself and your art, you’ll find a way. Keep learning, keep evolving, and most importantly, keep showing up. The journey is tough, but the magic happens when you push past doubt and keep creating. Trust your instincts, embrace the challenges, and never stop believing in the power of your own voice.
