In her recent interviews, Paula T speaks about how the very concept of opening up inside out to her lover, gave her the words for her debut song ‘Canary’. The raw & wild emotions which her lover recoiled from became her truth serum. Her vulnerability became her art. ‘Canary’ is a crispy song that moves you out of the tight coils of heartbreak heaviness towards the bright crispy daylight of freedom. The rhythm of this track is similar to the buzziness of a bee. Paula T mentions that while recording ‘Canary’ her instructions to her fellow musicians were to create a weird and glitchy sound like a hummingbird’s flight. Starting the song with drumbeats and birds chirping is a feral mix, and it is my first time listening to something like this.

‘Canary’ comes with quirky lyrics, the words are reflections of the state of chaotic mind that is common post a heartbreak. The fragile expectations, the mirror of life & intimacy, the messy aftermath of disappointments. A relationship contains everything, both good & bad and it is not just about being romantic. Life is too short to wear the fake mask of perfection. To bare oneself inside out in a relationship is not just about spicing things up but also a journey to know oneself.
Paula T’s music is fresh and very contemporary. This is her first release which makes it exciting as we await her upcoming singles and album. Once a concert pianist who touched the instrument since she was 6 years old, Paula Tartell is a Brooklyn-based emerging singer, songwriter, as well as a producer.
