‘i hate that i love you’ by Dax is a vulnerable and furious track

‘i hate that i love you’ is the final track in Dax’s album ‘From A Man’s Perspective’. It lays out the emotions of a love-hate relationship. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of internal conflict. Here, adoration and resentment are interlocked, almost at battle with each other. Lines such as “I hate that I love you, I hate that I care” hold the pain of loving someone who keeps hurting you. Dax’s candid storytelling, combined with his masterful singing, makes the listener feel his pain. Moreover, “I don’t understand why we just couldn’t work”, followed by the echoey, pained “Why?” yelled in the background is just one example of how the atmosphere of the song, which is a masterful blend of somber melodies and rhythmic beats, is built.

The subdued instrumental backdrop allows the weight of the lyrics to take center stage. His heartache and pain are the main events, raw and unmasked. Both pain and fury overrun his voice at once. The ebb and flow of the tempo mirrors the unpredictability of emotions in a love-hate dynamic. Likewise, so does the way in which he switches between delivery speed.
