‘Airplane’ builds slow, with its ambient track calling for our narrator (Carl De Villa) to board their flight. Soon, and almost abruptly we’re soaring high above the sky, floating in a soundscape that feel unmoored to anything.
Every description feels untethered to solid ground, every texture soft and in constant motion. The soundscape and descriptive lyrics seem to paint in this sense of weightlessness, a shared experience. It evokes that drop in your stomach when a plane first takes off and that swoop right before it lands.
The lyrics on ‘Airplane’ urge the vessel to take them higher, so high they’re soaring above soft clouds. Take them above to another plane almost, getting “…caught in a magical flight…” where “…everything feels so right…”.
‘Airplane’ by Carl De Villa pulls on this sense of almost whimsical escapism, with matter of fact descriptions that when complemented with the soundscape seem to make the listener soar. It’s soaring escape and bright fancy all wrapped up in sound that makes your stomach drop before emotions seem to take flight, unattached.
