Calamity Jay gets lyrically ethereal with “Music Monster”

Calamity Jay is recently formed music duo based in France consisting of Rahel Rosenwald, the lead vocalist and Jay C who does backup vocals and plays the guitar. The songwriting is done by both the artists who have released four singles in the past year. Their first single of 2024 called “Music Monster” that fuses the genres of Rock and Folk seamlessly.

The track starts off with the howling of wolves, set in the ambient sounds of the jungle. The electric guitar riff that comes in is an earworm that runs throughout the song which in my opinion is the element that stands out most on the track. This is accompanied by claps and percussion that provide an anthemic effect. I wish the song built up a bit more before Rahel Rosenwald’s voice comes in, however when it does, her vocal performance is unique, strong and competent. Jay C’s backup vocals are robotic, perhaps to personify the music monster while embodying country inflections which makes for good juxtaposition between the two voices of Calamity Jay.

The howling of the wolves, the guitar and the country-ness of it all is visually explained in the cover art. Lyrically the track explores the concept of a music monster who is always “on your side” which I found quirky and ethereal. The bridge is mellow and particularly enunciates the dependability and friendliness of this magical creature. From a songwriting perspective I thought this was really a unique concept to explore. I hope Calamity Jay continues to keep its lyrical eccentricities alive in the future.
