After a short break during the challenging days of lockdown, Star Persona has returned with a renewed determination to deliver their electrifying music. Emphasizing real instruments and musical storytelling, their latest track “Beauty Queen” is poised to rekindle the fervour of rock. Keep reading for my thoughts on how!
A lot about this song, from the outset, screams glam rock to me– with its messaging, storytelling, and production; from the upbeat, punchy start to the song with the drum fill, to the classic rock-n-roll style guitars that tickle your ears from the sides, there is an almost festive sound to this song that immediately catches your ear from the go.

The vocals are really well done, with a display of great melodic range, and well-layered harmonies and hummed lines that bring a combination to the table that almost reminded me of ABBA in their zenith; a really, really good thing. The drumming keeps a swift pace, with great consistency and variety in the sound choices that keep the grooves interesting, and your feet moving.

All these elements are brought together in a production that finds itself layering all the elements of “Beauty Queen” rather excellently, marrying all these elements together rather effectively for a solid, cohesive sound that sounds good no matter the scenario– and listening to this on the drive back home from work, there was more than one occasion on which I found myself lifting my hand from the wheel to air-drum along (not recommended :p)

In conclusion, “Beauty Queen” by Star Persona is a powerhouse of a track with great melodies, skilled instrument work, and a round, pleasing sound that achieves the band’s ethos of telling a story through real musical instruments in an era of increasingly electronically produced music; and I’m a fan!
