Pittsburgh-based trio Griffen Handshake, comprised of Millen Schuchert, Arjun Schuchert, and Gio Mori, have been carving out a space for themselves in the underground punk scene, playing shows across the Mid-Atlantic region. Their latest EP, Three Strikes and You’re Out, is a short but dynamic ride through alternative rock, pop punk, and more. Across five tracks and 19 minutes, the band experiments with different styles while maintaining their raw, high-energy sound.

The record kicks off with the title track, Three Strikes and You’re Out, a chaotic punk anthem driven by distorted guitars and a defiant vocal delivery. The lyrics are cryptic yet emotionally charged, reflecting themes of frustration, detachment, and rebellion. There’s an edge of instability, while the melody keeps things catchy. It’s a strong opening that immediately sets the tone.
Next up is Morgan, a left-turn into piano-driven alternative pop with dance-rock influences. The Hammond organ-like synths add a retro flair, and the chorus is one of the catchiest moments on the EP. The song tells a relatable story of being stood up and feeling out of place, capturing a mix of humor and disappointment. The blend of rock instrumentation and pop elements makes this one a standout.
Kicking Rocks brings Griffen Handshake back to a more straightforward pop punk sound, with a nostalgic feel reminiscent of Green Day. Lyrically, it’s packed with snapshots of memories and missed opportunities, creating a bittersweet reflection on growing up and moving forward. The layered guitars and driving rhythm section make this track feel effortlessly anthemic.
The mood shifts with Unclear, a more subdued rock song with a “feel-good” winter vibe. The vocal delivery is very interesting here, and the chorus feels like a warm hug despite its melancholic undertones. The song captures that universal feeling of seeking clarity in moments of doubt. This song might not be the loudest on the record, but its emotional weight lingers.
Closing out the EP is Wings, an anthemic rock song with a soaring guitar solo and introspective lyrics about the struggles of being an artist. The outro refrain repeats like a desperate mantra, encapsulating the uncertainty of chasing a dream. The song’s bittersweet tone makes it the perfect closer, leaving listeners with a sense of both hope with a pinch of salt. Much like how life should be led!
Griffen Handshake have crafted an ambitious and eclectic EP with Three Strikes and You’re Out, pulling from punk, alternative rock, and even pop dance-infused sounds. The varied genres, innovative arrangement and proudction, and honest lyricism make it a compelling listen. Whether you’re here for the raw punk energy or the melodic rock hooks, there’s something on this EP that will stick with you.
