Gary Dranow, with his band “Gary Dranow And The Manic Emotions”, seems to be on a roll these past months– every week I look in my letters, they have something new for us to listen to– and while I mean that with the greatest respect, keep reading for my thoughts on how “Bedroom Mentor”, their latest single, manages to positively knock my socks off.
Power. That’s the one word I could fathom when I kicked this song on for the first time, a pleasant tangent from their usual blues-rock sound, which I have always found to be more therapeutic and easy to listen, to be played on the radio when you’re having a chill day, and whatnot. Not “Bedroom Mentor”. This song commands your full and undivided attention right from the get-go, and it only gets better throughout the song.

My inner metalhead squealed in joy (yes, not all of us are worshippers of the dark underworld) when I heard this distinctive rock-meets-alt-metal sound; there are elements of hard-hitting punk rock, alternative metal. Gary soars with his vocals through the pyrotechnics; and boy, are there fireworks; the drumming in the background does not disappoint with enough china to fill up an earthenware shop (laughs) with the sheer technical mastery here grabbing one’s attention. The guitar riffing is intense, emotive, and it plays so perfectly into the vocals, which are richly and deeply layered throughout the song.

The production and the delivery are easily the best parts of the song (think of it, what else is there?) and it all works so expertly together. The sections with the acoustics let the voice shine through beautifully, while the heavier parts of “Bedroom Mentor” make one’s eyes go wide like they’ve just been thrust into a spiral of just pure, cosmic energy. The dynamics here are sky-high, but that’s the hallmark of a song well made, isn’t it, when you find yourself just leaning back when the song does end, while you reach for the loop button.
