‘Chained’ by Alwyn Morrison is a gentle pop-rock track that dwells in sorrow

‘Chained’ is the latest song by New York based artist Alwyn Morrison. The deeply personal pop-rock track was created in collaboration with composer and friend Michael Ales, who Morrison describes as “not only an incredible composer but also a brilliant all-around musician.” The track was recorded in Los Angeles, with producer Michael Carey.

The track explores the tumult of loving someone who is deeply unhappy, and feeling chained — to them, their unhappiness, and to your own by extension. The song tenderly explores this emotional toll. Wanting to help, and being unable to do anything. The helplessness that comes with that. The lyrics “I don’t wanna leave/but how can I say?/chained to a dark room/every night and day.” Addresses this feeling in a simple, personal way that in turn becomes universally relatable.

The track is heavily guitar led, with sparse backing vocals and production. The production is intentional, ensuring that the lyrics remain at the center of the track. The harmony of the backing vocals, hardly present for fifteen seconds, arrests you with its depth. Morrison shares that while recording the song, perfection wasn’t his focus. He needed to get the feeling out, and that’s exactly what he did. This is evident in the song. It is raw and vulnerable, like an X-ray of something living. You can feel its pulse.

The Artist

Morrison’s music thrums with the vivacity of urban life. He mixes the catchy, infectious energy of pop with the emotional and sonic depth of rock. His first two singles have earned over 500k views on YouTube, as well as airplay on 40 international stations, all achieved independently. If this start is any indication, Morrison is on a fast-track to stardom.
