‘Past Partial’ by SV is an Alternative EP that Melds Genres to Create a Unique, Emotionally-Charged Sound

Past Partial’ by SV is a 7-track genre-blending album, that takes on elements of neo-soul amongst others to create impressions of emotions, giving them a new perspective. Flutes, pianos, horns and synths synthesis to create a slightly off-kilter vibe, while the sparse lyrics create hit like a gut-punch.

Each track varies in intensity, with light rhythms and melodies braiding over eachother to create a mood.

‘Past Partial’: Track-by-Track

‘Past Partial’: ‘Now You Wish You Would’ – ‘Art Seek Rile’

We begin with ‘Now You Wish You Would’, a song led by a dreamy groove and flute-led melodies. The song seems to revolve around a phrase, an idea that is felt more than its articulated. The mood is found in the soundscape, where the vocalist scatts over the melodies. Melodies that feel interspersed with rhythm to create a mood.

“…It goes around…it goes over…”

The second track ‘Saving Grace’ puts its emphasis on the lyric, and the emotions those lines evoke. There’s a sense of awe and relief, release– accented by subtle horn melodies that feel warm, almost jazz-like. “…Angels are real…”, the narrator claims. “…I know because you breathe…”. The song is an ode that feels intensely sincere.

‘The Answer’ is straight-forward, a soundscape where, much like the first track, the theme revolves around an idea. A phrase: “…love is the way…”. It takes from the relief of ‘Saving Grace’, expanding on it with groovy horn and synth melodies that braid into eachother.

‘Art Seek Rile’ is driven by a guitar melody in reverse. This allows the track to move in two directions simultaneously, almost as though these melodies are walking backwards on a treadmill. The soundscape also seems to communicate retrospection in love, as our narrator muses on what feels like a love gone past.

“…Shining like you do, Sun & Moon don’t compare to you babe…”.

The song expands into bursts of sound before fading out.

‘Past Partial’: ‘Get Lost’ – ‘Target Atmos’ and Conclusion

‘Get Lost’ houses a building, pacing percussion that gives its soundscape a dynamic air. Flute melodies interweave with this steady percussion, opening the song with this mysterious air before that settles. Piano melodies soon join in, creating this melodic, expansive whirl.

This while the narrator hopes to escape, far away. “…Take my hand…let’s get lost…”.

‘All That’ is all fun rhythms and beats that make the song feel like an interval of sorts. The melodies build while the narrator describes someone who wants for more in their life, they “…wanna be all that…”. Heavy chords make the soundscape feel as though hands land heavily onto a keyboard.

The final song ‘Target Atmos’ is a chill track with a shuffling rhythm, that takes from the aspirational mood of the last song and expands on it. Here, the rhythm keeps count while melodies cascade and the narrator urges:

“…Butterfly, fly away…

…Fly High…

…Break free from the chains…”.

A fitting end to a dynamic EP that only just settles by the song’s end.

Conclusion

‘Past Partial’ by SV is an interesting EP that takes from a vast array of genres to create a unique soundscape. One that’s shaded in different hues and emotions that feel visceral yet distant enough to process them.

Dreamy, immersive and full.
