Lenax will make you wade into dark waters with their music. This is a band that has stretched the genre in their direction, while paying homage to the legends of the game. They spell doom, not very subtly, because we need to feel it in our bones. Their song Inversion from their 2023 EP Purity is what we look at today. We also had a chance of talking to the band about their project, their music and more.

Tell us about your explosive track Inversion. What is the particular theme in this song you have tapped into?
This song is a vision quest in which the listener is shown a world where the laws of reality are quite literally inverted, even such that the “stars shine their darkness expanding the night”.
It’s purpose is to make the listener question what their life would be like without their comfort zone, specifically what if there is no saving force such as a god, not is there a place of torment such as a hell. How would your life be different?
From the tones to the progression used, I feel a stank face is mandatory in this process. It is dark, heavy and deliberate. Inversion has all the layers to address the cacophony from hell, with blast beats and heavy, dominant growls. Lenax deliver on their sound with a passion, the same that they study their music with. It is black metal at its finest, with flavours that only this band can nail. It is the progression towards the chorus that will encourage you to headbang like all hell has broken loose.
Composition and writing ideologies
When composing themes of the supernatural, how do you go about writing the lyrics?
Often a song is sparked by an idea, but then inspired by the sound of the music. I will take a pop culture piece of horror such as vampires, demons, and black magic, and then tell a story with that. Often the imagery in the songs are metaphors for things in everyday life.
Who are some go-to inspirations for Lenax? Are there some rarely known artists who have been a major game changer for you?
Black Metal is a very diverse genre, and quite often you will find a fan such as myself really digging in to entirely unknown bands with unique creativity. What I may call a household name with bands such as Mephorash, Negative Plane, or Nixil will sound entirely obscure to most.
There are some bigger named bands we absolutely go to for inspiration such as Mayhem, Deathspell Omega, even early thrash bands like Slayer.

What about the journey to Beneath the Chapel? What kind of journey do you see since Tyrants?
Beneath the Chapel is certainly a journey, and one that presents a story of not just rebellion but freedom from religious trauma. Tyrants, being a cover, is a love note to the band Immortal. They are to me one of those bands where I can listen to their entire discography.
When the double bass comes in, mayhem can ensue. This is where Lenax are all within their element, giving us tastes of some of the best breakdowns and doom elements. Tones modulate in an ever-so-defined fashion, to emulate the hell that they praise. Instrumentals are incredibly precise, sharp and lethal.
Black Metal, from the roots
Purity is an incredible EP that defines the genre for you as a band. Is there another EP or LP in the works?
Absolutely. Right now we have six songs in the preliminary stages for a full length titled “Infection”. There will be a theme here that crosses the streams between alien intelligences with those of the demonic. In fact the first song is being sent off for mastering now!
What part of your performance would you say the audiences connect to the most?
For us it is the entire musical and emotional experience of the set. We begin our live show, coming right out the gate running. Through the course of the performance there are highs and lows, we aren’t the kind of band where every song sounds the same. There are timing changes, shifts in style, all meant to instil similar shifts in mood of the listener.

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
