‘Newborn Fossil’: Track-by-Track

‘Newborn Fossil’: ‘Newborn Fossil’- ‘The First Summer’

We begin with the titular track, ‘Newborn Fossil’, a track brimming with bright punk raw energy. It’s lines seem to make observations about our narrator. Someone who has seen themselves grow stronger and on the cusp of a new journey.

Its sound is an expansive freefall, allowing emotions to overlap and layer over elements that feel clearly distinguishable in the soundscape. It introduces us to something kinetic and raw.

‘Lo-Fi’ adds this deeper layer on introspection to the EP while retaining the bright energy from the last track only with a slightly darker edge. In this story, our narrator has found themselves and here, they find their newer, more full identity linked to media and sound.

If the last song was about the healing power of sound, this one links different forms of media with memory.

‘The First Summer’ is quick-paced and fueled with an electric energy, as we follow our narrator through what feels like a time of pure relief and creative alchemy.

“…The first summer out of our slumber…

…Everything is possible…

…Every waking dream feels possible…”.

The melodies on this track overlap in a gorgeous cascade before finally settling into something calm and aligned.

‘Newborn Fossil’: ‘Plenty & Shine’, ‘No Fraction’ & Conclusion

The settled feeling in ‘The First Summer’ roots itself in ‘Plenty & Shine’, a track that feels positively life-affirming while pulling on nostalgic longing. There’s something about the melodies on this track that feel steady and regulated almost.

“…Gone are the days of plenty & shine…”.

‘No Fraction’, the final track on the album uses melodies that feel hooked to the rhythm, swinging to-and-fro in a wonky march towards the finish line. The sound is dark and steady, that concentrates all the emotions and questions we’ve been asking into a simple phrase: “Can this momentum be sustained?”

It’s the perfect ending to the EP, embracing all its tones and lines while allowing more space for introspection and evem speculation.

Conclusion

‘Newborn Fossil’ by Marcus: The Apex Predator! is an interesting EP, infused with raw energy and expert playing. It’s lyrics feel like deep acknowledgement that is bolstered by an expansive energy that feels full.

Energetic, Dynamic, Raw and Emotionally-charged.
