‘*’ (Asterisk): Track-by-Track

‘*’ (Asterisk): ‘Fever’-’Black Dog’

Track one, ‘Fever’ introduces us to an expansive guitar melody that feels hollow. This like its played in an empty room or through an empty. This then transitions to a bright sounding guitar and percussion that takes us on a spiralling journey. While our narrator seems to reflect on a love where the passion burns at an unbearable fever pitch.

‘Wave After Wave’ is calmer, pulling us in with strings that seem to spiral while retaining that percussive brightness. The melody flows over and expand, while the lyrics muse on a love that feels distant. Pushing and pulling like a tremendous wave.

‘Here I Stand’ pulls in with a bright pop-sound, acoustic and bright, with lines that muse on loneliness on cold nights. There’s a dark edge to the track, that highlights that familiar lonely air.

“…Every night I see your face inside my dreams….

…Here I stand alone again….”.

‘Ocean Life Living’ is bright, with an optimistic swing. It’s lines are a fueled by this sense of escapism that feels breezy yet building in rhythm and intensity.  “….Run til everything is gone….”.

‘Black Dog’ in the mean time dips into a darker edge, sinking its teeth into potential that feels cautiously optimistic. It urges us to leave the past behind and focus on the potential of all that expansive future ahead. The song is optimism with edge.

“…Sail through the storm,

The future is not behind you…”.

‘*’ (Asterisk): ‘Dogeared Boy’-’If Only’

‘Dogeared Boy’ pulls us into the story of unrequited and used love that sounds almost as breezy as a summer banger. The boy described in the song isn’t seen, used for only one thing and ignored when it comes to the rest.

‘Catch and Release’ uses beats that push and pull, a rhythm that slows before quickening to create this interesting pull-like effect. The lyrics are disarmingly honest, while the narrator on the track describes their approach to relationships, straight to the point.

The track evokes the mood of a bright, dusky twilight.

‘Taken By You’ by feels dark and resigned in comparison, reminiscing on a love that feels hard to let go of. The lyrics almost beg to ge released, not wanting to be affected by their (ex)-lover’s allure anymore.

“…I’m taken by you…

…You’ll always have me…

…I’m under your spell release me…”.

‘Timeless’ muses on that familiar loneliness in a way that feels deeper and more involved. The track’s catchy melodies pull the listener in, while the narrator finds themselves bereft of warmth, isolated.

“…There’s no one left and I’m all alone…”.

The final track on the album, ‘If Only’, feels like a loud, moody cascade of almost cathartic emotions. The soundscape is dark, while also feeling settled in, with strings that resonate on a deeply emotional note that seems to resonate with you. An expansive, deep, swirl of emotion.

Conclusion

‘*’ (Asterisk) by Simeon Kirkegaard captures a vast array of emotions that feel familiar and moving. They touch and resonate with deep parts of one-self, setting the pace and running through this gambit with quick-paced nuance in mind.
