Johnny Marr created some fantastic layered guitar sounds in The Smiths and even in his solo career. The reason I bring up Johnny Marr, is the melodic discourse The Marabar Caves take. Trouble is their first released single, and its the personification of ecstasy in your headphones.
Using a devilishly simple chord structure, TMC don’t hassle you with complications. You’ve had enough in your life already, now its time to groove to some tunes. Supplying the right tune, the blues based guitar echoes in the background. The vocals are a reflection of Marr’s voice, a melodic angel humming in your ear. The Keith Richards style solo in between are great Stones vibes, while the catchy chorus remains looping in your head. Catching quicker pace towards the end, it closes out with a bang any great song would deserve.
The Marabar Caves show us relatively little with this single release. I would have loved a double or triple A side release, but they’re building towards it and that allows space for appreciation. Their sound has the alt-rock aura that has been lost in the past few years of complicated layering. Hopefully the group is just getting started on delivering some high quality music.
