“Puffy Head” by Powers of the Monk: a soothing Indie-folk track

Powers of the Monk is a band based in Detroit Michigan made up of artists David s. Monk and CasSondra Powers. They released their first album soon after they were formed in 2006 when their music leaned more towards electronic rock. After a Hiatus, they are back with a sound that leans much more towards indie pop and indie folk with producer Dani Macchi. Their latest single is the very nostalgic and dreamy “Puffy Head” which serves as proof that it is never too late to do what you love and that there is such a thing as right timing!

“Puffy Head” begins with angelic vocal harmonies along with mild guitar tones that together set an ethereal ambience. The instrumentation is simple and the beat is extremely groovy. The guitar chords feel peaceful while the chaotic and intentionally unclear production adds a dreamy effect.  The vocal performance is sweet, airy, high-pitched and continues to be multi-layered throughout the track. The bridge that has the baby-ish vocals enhanced is particularly airy and soothing.

Lyrically the words “Puffy Head” is perhaps a reference to a head full of dreams. The writing seems to be from the perspective of a child who thinks about their future as a rocket man in space with a PhD, living a life is filled with action. While the themes are out there in space, several contemporary references such as “Pink Floyd” and “Chocolate Chip Cookies and Ice-cream” keep the writing grounded. The primary motif, which is to “blow your mind” is emphasised through the device of repetition.

The cover art feels like it was made by a child and is thematically consistent with the last two singles “Firefly” and “Switching Rails” by Powers of the Monk. The song is a simple catchy melody that also speaks directly to your own inner child! Make sure to check out the track here:
