“Don’t Be Yourself”, by The Rocket Summer: Effortless elegance in rock

Bryce Avary, better known by his musical and online moniker “The Rocket Summer”, has been at it since the 2000s, causing uprisings with his work— getting featured on publications like Billboard, Rolling Stone to name just a few; and with his latest single, “Don’t Be Yourself”, brings a fresh, enjoyable sound to the fore. Keep reading for my thoughts!

Right from the start of the song, Bryce’s vocals envelop the listener in a sea of melody, backed strongly by his lyrics, which are articulate, deep, and meaningful; conveying themes of self-love. The singing is great, too, with the mid-to-high register singing being right in Bryce’s sweet spot. The delivery is elegant and effortless, and brings a layer of easy listening to the song that is hard to achieve otherwise. The rest of the ensemble keeps up rather nicely, too, with the guitars and the kick-heavy drum groove that keeps the listener company as the song starts picking the pace up; and as the song draws gently to a close at four minutes and change, there’s a bittersweet feeling, and an overwhelming urge to do it all over again.

The production, of course, helps a ton, with the gentle, breezy drums and the strings and pads in the background as the song unfolds, creating the warm blanket of sound that makes “Don’t Be Yourself” such an enjoyable listen. There is drama, there is panache, and there is polish— all in just the right amounts, I will add— and the master wraps things up nicely indeed.

All in all, “Don’t Be Yourself”, by The Rocket Summer: Bryce Avary brings the very best of his sound, and presents it in a package that is solid from the ground up, and gets the fundamentals on the dot. Check out the track here!
