Tony Loud Woodz is a Philadelphia-based rapper that loves experimenting with sounds to create a flavour of rap that is very distinctly Philly- but combines it with a more melodic, flow-driven approach to his lyricism. citing names like Big Boi, Ludacris, ODB and 2 Chainz as his influences. In his own words, he is about ready to ‘take rap, hip-hop, and alternative genres by the throat and have his way with it’. Bringing a fresh sound to rap with interesting production choices like the toy xylophone (I’m not joking) on the title track, ‘What The Hell Is This’, and a fast, potent flow, Tony Loud Woodz presents his latest project of the same name.
A more downtempo-style beat on ‘BYGGFT’ filled with Tony’s signature triplet rhyming style catches my ear immediately- there is a good amount of energy going on in the song- ranging from his generally peppy, happy-sounding vocals to the heavily autotuned, half-sung, half-rapped style that harkens back to the early days of Travis Scott. The innovation continues on ‘Barista’, with a harder, more aggressive production with a more straightforward, yet potent flow, but combined with a distinctly recognizable Rhodes piano in the background with a growly, nasty (in the best ways possible) 808, that all come together to make for a legitimate bop.
On ‘Large Amounts’, there is one thing in said large amounts- ambition. Tony rarely misses the mark as he tells the world he’s trying to make it and goes bars on the kind of success he desires- a kind of raw honesty and straightforward, no-nonsense attitude that is definitely respectable. Personally, however, my track of choice from the record is ‘Put You On It’, with a vibe that I can only describe as what I would play in my car after a long day– as a song to throw on and forget about everything but the drive and the music. There is a great mix of interesting elements, and the production is filled tastefully with layers, there is something for every kind of listener– from the casual singer to the meticulous audiophile.
Overall, Tony Loud Woodz makes for a fresh blast of air on his latest record, ‘What The Hell Is This’- it made for an interesting evening as I listened to this record intently and then proceeded to pen my thoughts on this album. I overall like the concept of the album and think it will make a good addition to your playlists too. Check it out here-
