‘Daydreaming’ by Backstrom is a Folk Song that Captures the Pain of Pressure & a Need for Escape

Daydreaming’ by Backstrom and Bart Topher is a folk song that rests within the realms of country and americana country. Its guitar-led melody, backed by wistful, subtle strings, lends the song a mood that is sad with hints of longing. The lyrics daydream of leaving life behind, taking a road trip through the desert, casting aside and burying the past in its sands.

The lines sound dream-like, almost as though they are word for word a retelling of something the singer had daydreamed about. Its mood of escapism holds with it the pressure and weight of whatever is bogging the narrator down, this enough to seek some means of escape.

‘Daydreaming’: Desert Yellows & Blues

‘Daydreaming’ paints a picture of long, winding paths down yellow & orange desert roads that feel vivid yet blurred. The guitar-led dreamscape that is conjured seems to give the singer & listener some form of respite from the things that threaten to weigh them down completely.

There’s a desire to move forward from this past, starting anew.

“I’m gonna sell the farm, I’m gonna buy a truck.

Gonna hit the road, never looking back…”.

There’s this sense that far away, in the middle of nowhere, there is potential to be “…rest. Let go and move on…”. The weight of whatever that’s on their shoulders can be put down.

“…I’m gonna ride down to Mexico,

Gonna watch the sun settle over the rocks.

I’m gonna bury the past in the desert sand,

I won’t look back again…”.

But those are moments caught from an extensive reverie, the last line from the song’s refrain attempts to say as much.

“…I won’t look back again,

I’m only daydreaming…”.

‘Daydreaming’ by Backstrom and Bart Topher is sad and wistful, heavy with the weight of something that feels permanent. It pleads to escape from this predicament, far off in the desert where they can go and never come back again.
