‘BIG SADS’: Grief & Hope
The opening track, ‘BIG SADS’ is expansive in its attempt to soothe. It begins on a warm note of comfort, not addressed to anyone in particular. It channels being wrapped in a warm rug on a cold day that’s unrelenting. ‘A Good Year’ sits in the pain that the last song was attempting to soothe while capturing dialogue with the singer’s inner monologue.. There’s a slow build to the realisation that the singer spent the year “…pretending to be human…” in their grief.
‘So Many Places’ sounds like a dedication to love lost. Its tone is sadder yet driven, introducing an edge to the sadness that the songs are beginning to process. ‘Better Days’ is a looping slow, melancholic yet moving descent into sadness. However, it moves away from this pain and hurt by the end, allowing the grief to slowly ebb away.
‘Didn’t Need You’ is a sound and theme fully realised. It is bright with trepidation and hope in the face of grief that is gradually fading. There’s still melancholy but there’s also a sense that sense of acceptance is helping heavy feelings settle.
‘BIG SADS’ by St. South is a journey through grief and loss with heavy, moving feelings that begin to settle by the end.
