‘Villain of Me’: Empathetic Bitterness
The lyrics ooze attitude while feeling sorry for both the love lost between the narrator and their subject. This while the lines also seem to emphathise with the subject’s struggle. “…I can see the fear in your eyes…”.
“…So, you try to kill your pain,
When it’s tearing you apart…”.
The singer describes how this person made a villain of them, seemingly sympathising with the person while expressing their anger at this betrayal. This resigned fury is captured in the song’s refrain
“…Now you’re on your own, nowhere to go,
You’re all alone.
So go on and push me away,
You’ll make a villain of me, a villain of me…”.
‘Villain Of Me’ describes “…claustrophobic…” loneliness, the pain of someone with a “…broken heart…” who “…won’t let anyone in…”.
The soundscape that backs these lyrics is urgent, impatient and frustrated. The percussion’s insistence and the guitar’s grating rawness gives the ‘Villain Of Me’ a dark flash of this ebbing frustration. Frustration that seems to come from not being let in and simply pushed away.
In all its movement and raw, deep energy, ‘Villain Of Me’ by Intruder 424 uses its genre to express frustration while also allowing space for empathy. Its soundscape is energetic while its lyrics can move its listeners with its cocktail of empathy and sympathetic frustration.
