Album Review: Knocked Loose scale up extreme hardcore with “You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To”

Knocked Loose have already had a tantamount year with their appearances at Bonnaroo and Coachella. For many, it was witnessing a band take the stage the way they deserve to. For others, it was an eye-opening performance to a realm that hasn’t been explored. Shattering the glass ceiling of hardcore to become a genetic fibre of the people, they are back with their latest album. This is called You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To.

A star-studded album with cameos and some of their heaviest music to date, Knocked Loose are dominating this sound. Along with Graphic Nature, they are one of the bands that sliced into the spotlight again with their explosive music. The 1:46 song Thirst is enough to show you exactly that, a band finding a new gear to kick into. Power is their privilege, as much as you might think you have heard the riff before, you’re hearing this kind of execution the first time. It is the paramount dedication to the art by the band, making hardcore a household name for those who experience it from them first hand.

Hardcore punk gets a return

Released as a single earlier, Suffocate ft. Poppy has the wondrous contrast you need to sell this genre. From blast beat sections to riff chases, you’re in for the whole spectrum to be experienced. As polished as their production might be, the band has that raw energy that can make floorboards in tuck away clubs loose.  Kevin “Pac Sun” Kaine goes all in supporting the riffs from Isaac Hale & Nicko Calderon. You can hear the music in your bloodstream, like a nicotine swig that just doesn’t quit.

Mortality sees a new face, with Moss Covers All. Though it might only be the length of an interlude, Knocked Loose aren’t here to waste time. Their delivery ensures a ravenous exchange of energy from listener to performer. As much as I’d like to call them musicians that they are, they are dedicated performers. If punk and metal only had musicians, we’d be ok with listening to them at home. This projected, vociferous rage is what people visit to absorb.

The biggest sound they have had

Compared to the other songs, we are in for the “soft rock track” with Take Me Home. It also acts for a great balance from the first act, blatant aggression and thrill being executed with precision. It has the industrial tone for the opening, and Kevin Kaine giving us some stick grooves with a lot of character. Slaughterhouse 2 with Chris Motionless is another highlight. Probably the second most famous thing from Scranton, Pennsylvania, his recognisable voice is a gem with  Bryan Garris. The lyrics hit like molten nails, bringing the feel and pace of the song with accuracy.

Knocked Loose are one of those bands that garner attention with their live performances. Their film accompanying A Tear In The Fabric Of Life has had positive reactions from fans, calling it “a beautiful depiction of grief in life”. It is knowing that a band like this delivers with hardcore music and expands their spectrum. Along with this, their live tours with Thy Art is Murder, Gojira and A Day to Remember brought them exponential support in a short period of time. It is finding the joy in this grind that has resulted in some of their sharpest music.

When riffs are ironed into drop tunings, it is the rhythm that keeps the track going. Bryan Garris has made some monumental improvements in his screaming style, going for a gorier, direct scream rather than a guttural attempt. In this album, he shows how he has pretty much mastered it.

Knocked Loose and their meteoric rise

Blinding Faith as well as Sit & Mourn revisit their strengths in fabulous fashion. It is the blistering pace at which they deliver their music, connected to their hardcore punk roots. While they incorporate metalcore elements in parts, their best friend remains in hardcore, with all the trapped energy. The band has had a unique diversion from their sound in 2016 to now, with a variety of factors influencing the same.

You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To is the band hanging out with friends and tapping into their wildest energies. Knocked Loose have contained the talents of Poppy and Chris Motionless perfectly, the songs are a burgeoning core of energy and fury. They scale up their sound and production here, approach mortality as humanly as possible. While respecting their sound at birth, they also progress into other methods that complement the gut punch their music has. If this doesn’t find the right ears to appreciate, nothing will. Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
