Clare Easdown is singer-songwriter from Sydney Australia who adds an electronic touch to the classical melodies she is trained in. She has been releasing music since 2022 and has built up an extensive discography of singles in the last two years. Her latest release “Stigma Enigma” is successful in sonically recreating the experiences of pain and hopelessness.

The track has ambience as its backbone with sound effects like the rain sprinkled throughout. This creates a moody atmosphere that the light percussion enhances. The instrumentation takes its pauses to emphasise the Clare Easdown’s voice which is the highlight of the track.
We are introduced to the voice of Clare Easdown through the line “No one understands me” which left me with chills. Her voice is shrill yet heavy, grounded with unease. The husky and whisper-like quality of the vocals is at once eery as well as angelic. The effect of echo layered with highly electricized, high-pitched harmonies make for a psychedelic and transcendent experience.

Lyrically the track explores the themes of loneliness and the absence of feeling safe and understood. The line “Stigma Enigma won’t let love in” stood out to me and accurately described the hopelessness and judgement that can often be all encompassing. As the title of the track suggests, stigma around mental health can have an enigmatic quality to it that can be difficult to share openly or pin down. “The Rate Race” can be read as a criticism of capitalism that doesn’t make space for anyone who does not completely fit in.
I thought that the songwriting was very vulnerable and I commend the openness with which Clare Easdown has poured her heart out into her latest single! You can listen to it here:
