‘The Stupid Way you Breathe’ by The Flying Beets is a Cathartic Expression of Pain in a Rock Song

‘The Stupid Way you Breathe’ by The Flying Beets is an indie rock song that barely hides it’s frustration with its subject. Guitars with deep tones drag through the percussion while the bass keeps up the track’s mood and tempo. It does this almost as though the soundscape’s tone wants throw out/expel emotions.

‘The Stupid Way You Breathe’: A Cathartic Expression of Paradoxical Emotions

The lyrics describe utter disdain and  pair with paradoxical emotions. There’s hate in their tone, almost as though things would be better without this person that doesn’t “…really care about…” them. The opening lines introduce the listener to a sort of loop of disdain and loathing.

“…You think its funny all the time,

I think its funny when you whine…”.

These lines seem backed by an epiphany, a realisation that they aren’t really cared for in this equation.

“…I don’t want you,

And you don’t really care about me.

I hate the stupid way you breathe…”

‘The Stupid Way You Breathe’ holds a certain disregard for any sort of resposibility, lashing out because of the pain that’s been inflicted onto the narrator. The song feels like its begging for this catharsis, a moment to expel these feelings out into the open.

This is apparent in the lines before the second refrain.

“…If there’s an army on the line,

I could leave and they’d be fine…

…they don’t really care for me,

I hate the stupid way they breathe….”.

The song’s final seconds highligh paradoxical emotions, moments that seem to bubble up as the lyrics lash out with unbridled emotions.

“…I don’t want to be alone,

I might want to be alone,

I don’t want to be alone…”.

‘The Stupid Way You Breathe’ by The Flying Beets is scathing in its expression of deep betrayal and hurt. Its instrumentation compliments its lyrics by communicating the idea of expelling or throwing out negativity. The song sounds cathartic in its moving expression of pain and the paradox that comes with it making it a compelling listen.
