Blackfoxy, a funk ensemble, shares a profound connection with the rich musical heritage of African Americans. They bring forth an electrifying energy that seamlessly blends festivity and intimacy, both in their live performances and within their music. On their latest single, “African Beat”, they bring together a wide variety of influences to create a song with one of the strongest personalities I’ve heard in a while. Keep reading for my thoughts!
The whole song screams a happy, upbeat sound, and it does so rather unabashedly; with influences ranging from old-school American country, to surf rock, to funk, all the way to jazz and world elements. From the melodic nostalgia of a good old Frank Zappa record, to the energy of Boney M., to the seemingly endless cameos of traditionally African percussion instruments, this song has a sonic boatload to offer, and all these elements come together to create a festive, energetic atmosphere that is infectious by nature, and electric in execution.

Right from the intro, the picked bass stands out with its groove and sound, sitting firmly centre at the low-end, lending the rest of the song something to grip, something to hold onto– this is evident in the groove that gets built and is maintained through the rest of the song.

The vocals are another standout aspect of this song, with a wide variety of voices taking care of duties here, all never letting the energy of the song dip low for even a single second. The vocals flow together with the instruments almost effortlessly, with a very danceable sound that took me right back to the good old days of disco in the 1980s. There is a lot to appreciate here– and I’m glad.
The mix and master, is another highlight here; because it is beyond challenging to make sure the various elements in this song stand out and stand out well, at that; in which department, “African Beat” excels; from the ringing pianos in the chorus to the list of percussion elements and the rich, thick vocal layers, everything is held together excellently well, and the soundstage is wide and expansive, making for an excellent listen.
Overall, “African Beat” by Blackfoxy is a genuine stick of dynamite that will supercharge the mood of anybody that will listen to it. Two thumbs up, and then more! Check out the track here:
