“A Real Man”, by Dax: A soft, welcoming hip-hop track

Of the very few names in the industry that need no introduction aside from the name, Dax is one — the Nigerian-Canadian rapper, singer, and songwriter’s been cementing his place in hip-hop for a while now, unabashed in his penchant to touch on more sensitive topics, setting fire to the microphone through his rhyming, and more. On his latest single, “A Real Man”, he tries a different approach while still retaining his signature well and truly; keep reading for my thoughts!

Right from the outset of the track, it’s clear that “A Real Man” isn’t going to be one of Dax’s rap magnum opa– this one isn’t ten minutes long like “The Next Rap God”, or nearly as filled with dense rhyming that show off his lyrical abilities; yet, there’s something different on offer here — Dax’s ability to weave stories in elegant metaphors shines through, and this is songwriting in its upper echelons — and it is, while different, also refreshing.

The well-crafted main vocal melodies medley excellently with the soft guitar riffs in the background that sound through the whole track, while the minimalistic hip-hop style drums maintain the pace of the song with much panache and poise. The vocal harmonies and the ad-libs in the chorus parts sound thick and deep, with Dax’s signature ad-libs elevating the track further. Dax delivers powerful, heartfelt messages in his lyrics, speaking to the societal standards that men are expected to adhere to; and does it with a charm undeniable.

The production is, without a doubt, top-class — making use of just the right sound design choices and effects to empower “A Real Man” even more so — while the tight, a-plus mix and master holds things together with remarkable precision. Top this off with a warm master with its own charm and drive, and you have what is an undeniably great listen to hum along to. Check out the track here!
