Group Syrup’s self-titled 8-track, indie-rock EP with an unsettling edge with a mood that teeters on a knife’s edge. It moves through a soundscape that simultaneously feels distant yet intense, playing with pacing and dynamic movement, deliberate but almost hesitant.

‘Group Syrup’: Track-by-Track
‘Group Syrup’: ‘Bridge Pickup’-’Mountain’
‘Bridge Pickup’ is characterised by a funky bass, switches in tempo and a solid guitar solo at its climax. The track sifts through thoughts and feelings that come through during an activity that feels regular, routine and repetitive.
“…I got all these thoughts on the road, but the good ones they’re last…”.
‘Green Tea’ holds this sense of space with motions seemingly captured in a cafe of sorts, where you can hear the clatter of cutlery. Bass with edge deliberately builds, with slow rhythms before gradually picking up the pace.
‘Inside the Riot’ sounds as though it describes a fight with the self with a satisfying . This with subdued rhythms and melodies pulling at this almost empowered admission.
“…Now I know I don’t want another person in my house…”.
‘Mountain’ sounds as though it ascends, with this subtle distant nudge that seems a bit off-kelter the more its heard. “…Either you go to the mountain, or the mountain comes to you…”.
‘Group Syrup’: ‘Robots’-’Walk it Off’
‘Robots’ reflects on the effects of AI on the self, and where creativity could be headed in the future. Its percussion and almost yielding melody betrays this sense of cascading spiral of dissatisfaction.
‘Seine’ follows through to the fallout of this dissatisfaction, using a rolling swing melody to keep the sense of this spiral. This while ‘Tremble’ employs a shuffling rhythm to counter this spiral almost, attempting to ground amidst the spiral.
The last song on the ‘Group Syrup’ EP, ‘Walk it Off’ uses its calm guitars to linger in this sense of sadness, spiralling again after only a moment of grounding. The EP ends with this acknowledgement of contradictions, leading to a satisfying conclusion of sorts.
“…Feeling races in our bones…
…And all these bridges that I built from scratch, I’m falling out of line I know…”.
