Heavy June creates a singer-songwriters paradise with “Wonder Wheel”

Heavy June is your seasonal break to appreciate music again. The Brooklyn based artist brings the rich heritage of the music scene he belongs to. With this, he brilliantly DIYs his own style to create a gauge of music that appeals to everyone. Zealous, chirpy and full of excitement, he is back with his second album after YES Entry. This one is called Wonder Wheel.

The chugging of the acoustic and heartbeat synced rhythms are the hymn you want to be a part of. Heavy June opens the album with Good For It, simple chord progressions drawing you in. Lyrically, he appeals to us all, connecting parts of life with the under wash of emotions we tend to ignore. Simple harmonies tantalise you while creating a beautiful reverie of the chorus which you’ll get addicted to.

Then comes the nature of the compositions. Heavy June isn’t traversing the sordid plains of James Joyce. He speaks to us in a friend’s voice, through music that we can hum along to while doing chores. He is our fair-weather friend, and our compadre in chaos. A track like Just a Melody encapsulates what he wants to sing about. The busker’s energy is strong with him, where you can almost imagine large crowds grooving to his music.

That melodic bounce

P’s and Q’s has a R&B rhythm tying you to the song. He skates through the rhythm like a stuntman, all while baring his heart with vulnerability. It is an exploration through his journal, simple life through his complicated eyes. Love Comes EZ comes next. Another simple set of chords, with the layering of a musical virtuoso. This is how you get the crowd to always remember your music. Make it as special as the underlying moments they will remember forever.

This is a stadium artist giving you his best through a peephole in his bedroom studio. The way he uses effects, monologues and snippets of audio to create an almost interactive bubble is amazing to listen to. Heavy June is your pop punk themed Halloween mascot, bringing a slew of emotion with his evocative music.

Brain Damage has an emotional break while following on the lyrics of Love Comes EZ. It is an acoustic number that transports you to the streets of Venice while enjoying a snow cone. The layers that weave to become your magic carpet are amazing, makes escapism in all its glory worth it.

When we reach the true Brooklyn cafe street blend he brings, you’re wondering how the journey has brought him here. From YES Entry, Heavy June has leapt several stones in front, yet maintains a style. The style is that of your musician friend, someone who can connect with you, and hence can conquer the world. From the stories he recites to the magic he can create in melodies, a sorcerer’s wand he wields. Welcome to the Wonder Wheel:

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
