‘oh oh’ by Nikki Minerva is a Mellow, Melancholic Indie-Rock Track that Moves Through a Bittersweet and Aching Mindspace

The song ‘oh oh’ by Nikki Minerva is a mellow indie rock track that seems to go through the motions and feel its way through heartbreak. Aching and bittersweet, this slow, guitar-led track that takes its listener on a whirling journey through thought.

Every verse begins as though it continues the last, while each interlude of the song allows that emotion to settle in and down. The song feels like moments in time are stretching in place, just so that each emotion introduced has a moment to pass through. This with a chance to heal.

‘oh oh’: a pause

The song begins as though our narrator has woken up from a dream, while the rest of the song attempts to narrate the same. Each line seems to hold in it an emotion with constant, subtle pivots that lead us back to that moment when we (narrator and listener) wake up again.

This mood is repetitive, cyclical and melancholic. This keeping this listener encased in this bittersweet mindspace through the song. Ending and beginning with:

“…I wake up, still doused

With the words still in my mouth…”.

We go through everything left unsaid or unheard between two people. We’re given moments of past and present that feel both nostalgic and wistful, as though our narrator wouldn’t feel these emotions outside of this space.

“…Its strange how things stay from when you’re a kid.

I remember the feeling, not what you did…

…I saw you in a dream, your hair had turned all gray…

…You’re doing better, so I guess I’ll be alright...”.

Throughout its run-time, ‘oh oh’ by Nikki Minerva reflects on a relationship that has ended with heartache and wistful longing. We’re given a glimpse into these moments, where similarities and betrayal are immediately addressed. We’re given an insight into how heartbreak can change you, and where simple sighs can hold terrible weight.
