Eva Gertz is an independent songwriter and pianist from Massachusetts, known for her reflective and relatable lyrics paired with a moody, Joni Mitchell-inspired writing style. With classical piano training and a degree from Berklee College of Music, she blends groovy world-fusion, folk, and pop elements into her compositions. On her latest album, “Worth The Drive”, she brings to the fore a cheery, gentle sound — keep reading for my thoughts!
The 10-track album starts out with the soft-natured, delicate “Little Know It All” — with its clean electric guitars and its serene vocal harmonies, this track does a great job at setting the mood for the rest of the album rather eloquently — be it the execution of the track, or its raw emotive nature.
As we segue into the second track with “Art Collectors”, we encounter a deep, moody sound that makes liberal use of ad-libs and Rhodes pianos to paint a warm, velvety picture with its sound right from the very start. As the song proceeds, the listener is left in awe as the energy picks up gently in the chorus, continuing on till the end of the track. The unconventional and innovative song structure adds a further element of pizzazz, keeping things interesting throughout.

“Pot of Glamour” witnesses a shift in the mood, slightly, to a more introspective, almost confessional style of songwriting that hits the right chords — and deep. Eva’s vocal delivery particularly shines on this track, with her gentle vocal style blending perfectly with the LANY-esque atmosphere with the riverbed clean electrics and the vocal harmonies.
As we move on through the album, we encounter tracks like “Alone In Every Place”, “Along The Road”, and “Elk’s Eye”, which, with each of their unique approaches to the art of songwriting, do not fail to amaze with their overall execution. As we near the end of the album with “Save Haven”, we’re left feeling bittersweet with its soft, natural sound, and powerful, poignant piano writing. Eva, with no surprise, shines brilliantly here, and I’m loving it!
The production throughout “Worth The Drive” is crisp, clear, and heartfelt. The percussion injects dimension exactly where it’s needed — and it creates an expansive stage for the storytelling that Eva pulls off so well on “Worth The Drive”.
The mixing and mastering on “Worth The Drive” is wide, balanced while still retaining candor and energy, painting it all on a wide, expansive soundstage. Every instrument sounds well-chosen, superbly executed, and overall, heartwarming to listen to. The ensemble does a great job bringing the influences together, delivering one cohesive and easily great product. All in all, a winner of an album! Check it out here:
