“Ball de l’àliga”, by Periscopi Invertit: Fun, upbeat Mediterranean pop

Meet Mireia, the leader of the band Periscopi Invertit. They play a cool mix of Catalan folk tunes, North African beats, and jazzy vibes. Imagine old folk songs getting a modern twist with funky, Latin, and jazzy sounds, all while keeping that special Mediterranean groove. The band’s music reflects the journey of immigration in our diverse world, making it a unique and vibrant experience for listeners. Keep reading for my thoughts on their latest single, “Ball de l’àliga”!

The whole song has this mischievous, playful aura to it from the word go– with the flute part in the beginning played smoothly, and setting the stage for the rest of the ensemble that follows soon after. The flute is played smoothly, and the melodic part it does represent is filled with character and sounds quite nice.

As we step into the next part of the song, we’re greeted with jazz-inspired guitar and key sections, all while the acoustic bass keeps the ensemble company, helping the song move along swimmingly, steadily building the energy till we get to the higher-energy parts, where the percussion really makes its presence known, with the bongos and the shakers going along with the drum kit, thereby completing the ensemble. The percussion is a definite standout on this track, with its articulation and voice easily elevating the track to a very fun, very engaging listening experience.

The production is a fusion of elements from all across the Mediterranean, with the flutes from the east, as well as the percussion from the west and some parts of Africa; all while bringing in the trademark flavour of Latin jazz music while at it. There is a certain warmth, a specialty to the way “Ball de l’àliga” is executed, and I’m here to appreciate a little variety! The mix and master help, too, with excellent stereo imaging and tightness especially down in the lower ranges, making this song a cohesive, pleasing listen even from a technical standpoint.

So, all in all, “Ball de l’àliga” by Periscopi Invertit: this is a song that rings of cultural diversity, and manages to package it all into a palatable listen that I’m confident I’ll keep coming back to. Check out the track here!
